Shares
Access more than 1,700 companies on the ASX
Shares broadly allow you to buy a part of a company. As a shareholder, you generally share in the company's performance in the form of profits which can be distributed to you as dividends and/or capital growth if the value of your shares increase. Investing in shares has the potential to provide the following benefits:
  • Outperformance of other investments over the longer term
Although past performance is no indication of future performance, Australian shares have, on average, outperformed other types of investments such as cash, Australian property and Australian fixed interest over the last 20 years.
  • Diversification
Over 1,700 companies from a wide range of industries are listed on the ASX. By diversifying or investing in a range of companies you can reduce your risk by spreading your exposure across a wider variety of investments.
  • Liquidity
Shares can be bought and sold quickly. When you sell shares you generally have access to your money within three business days. Other investments often take longer to sell and convert to cash.

Warrants A warrant is a financial instrument issued by a bank or a financial institution and is traded on the ASX. Warrants provide another way to gain exposure to a variety of underlying assets, such as shares, to achieve a desired result. Investing in warrants can help you to:
  • achieve leveraged returns
  • diversify into a market or sector
  • protect the value of your underlying assets
  • earn extra income.

Exchange traded options An exchange traded option gives you the right to buy or sell an underlying share at a particular price on or before a specific date. When you exercise the option, you take up your right to buy or sell the share. Exchange traded options (ETOs) may allow you to:
  • hedge against a possible fall in the value of shares you hold
  • earn income from the premium received by writing call options against your shares
  • undertake to buy shares for less than their current price by locking in a buying price

Managed Funds
Choose from over 2000 managed funds from a wide range of fund managers, including MLC Limited.
Managed funds generally pool money from a large number of investors into a trust structure that is managed by investment professionals. This money is used to invest in a diverse range of assets that are not normally accessible to individual investors.

When you invest in a managed fund, you are allocated units in the fund. All units in the fund are of equal value. The value of your investment is the number of units you own multiplied by the market price of the units.
Managed funds deliver two types of returns: distributions and unit price growth.

Distributions represent income paid to you as a unit holder during the course of your investment. They consist of earnings the fund has generated over the period such as capital gains from the sale of fund shares or other fund investments, or income from dividends or interest earned.

Unit price growth occurs when the value of the investment has grown over the period of the investment. This results in an increase in the price of units in the fund.

There are a number of benefits associated with investing in managed funds:
  • your investment is managed by a team of investment professionals
  • individual or small investors can access investments that would otherwise be out of reach
  • the costs of investing and managing investments are spread across the whole fund delivering greater cost efficiencies for individual investors
  • managed funds are available in a wide range of different tax structures and asset classes
Investing in managed funds carries similar risks to investing in shares. As market conditions change, the value of your investment can rise or fall. There are also risks associated with investing in a managed fund itself, for example, it could close, change the investment professionals managing the fund and change the fees and expenses it charges.

Researching managed funds
NAB OnLine Trading's managed funds facility features a comprehensive search tool to help you shortlist your preferred investment options. And, you can research, each managed fund in detail to help you make your final choice.

Applying to invest in managed funds
NAB OnLine Trading provides you with access to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for the managed fund you select.

You can choose to receive a hard copy by mail or, for some managed funds, download the PDS online.

You should read the PDS before deciding whether to invest in the managed fund. Then you simply follow the instructions provided in the PDS to apply for units in the fund.

Once you've submitted your investment application, the relevant fund manager will inform you if you've been successful.

You should also read the AUSIEX Financial Services Guide for information about the fees that may apply when you invest in managed funds through NAB OnLine Trading.
